Retro Gaming on the iPhone

LED Basketball I just read about the release of LED Basketball for the iPhone. This app mimicks a standalone computergame from the 70s and looks great for a retro computer lover, although it's basically only a calculator.

The iPhone just seems to me like an ultimate retro game emulator. I would love to see a retro computer emulator, like a ZX Spectrum emulator. This would open up a huge database of retro computer games for the iPhone. So far, I have only read about a Gameboy Advance emulator for the iPhone.

As for LED Basketball, I haven't tried it yet, but it certainly creates more interest in retro gaming and retro computing.

Download in the App Store: LED Basketball and LED Football.

Amstrad released ZX ROMS ....

... Yonks ago so not seeing a speccy emu in the app store even more perplexing.

yeah, where is it!

AFAIK the ROMs for Sinclair ZX Spectrum were public domained by Amstrad - I am surprised that there's no emulator on the iPhone yet. Maybe Apple won't allow it because it would eat into their game sales?

Personally I'd pay for pre-compiled versions of Starquake and Nodes of Yesod, but I guess the original publishers (who are long gone ... Bubblebus and Odin) would have to agree.

Would be cool.

I'd love to see working ZX Spectrum emulator on iPhone, but then again, GBA is not bad either. Thanks for quoting me!

Glenda Adams of Maverick

Glenda Adams of Maverick Software announced that they have been developing a remake of the classic Lemonade Stand game that came bundled with early Apple II series computers.

Adams reports that she tracked down the original game and was able to preserve the original gameplay and economics, but has given the graphics a needed update.

agreed

Ha, I've assembled a wishlist for myself of potential remakes. The iPhone's a great platform for the level of abstraction, graphics, and engagement found in retro games, to say nothing of the natural history of Apple going back to the C64.

I haven't had a chance yet myself to do any earnest remakes, but I do think that my game Rogueship (www.rogueship.net) stands up as a spiritual successor to the era, in terms of gameplay and mood.

I'll tell you my big dream, though, which is to do a remake of Robot Odyssey. *That*, however, would be a material undertaking. One day, one day....
